Medicare Advantage (Part C)

Medicare Advantage is an all-in-one alternative to Original Medicare (Parts A & B), offered by private insurance companies approved by Medicare. Most plans include prescription drug coverage and many offer extra benefits not covered by Original Medicare.

How It Works

You still use Medicare, but your coverage is delivered through a private insurer. You pay your Part B premium plus any plan premium (many are $0). Plans have networks of doctors and hospitals.

Key Benefits

  • Often $0 monthly premium plans available
  • Includes prescription drug coverage (Part D)
  • Extra benefits: dental, vision, hearing, fitness
  • Annual out-of-pocket maximum protects your finances
  • Coordinated care through a network
  • Many plans include transportation and meal benefits

Things to Consider

  • Must use plan's network of providers
  • Referrals may be required for specialists
  • Coverage may vary by county and zip code
  • Plans change annually — review each year

Medicare Supplement (Medigap)

Medicare Supplement insurance, also called Medigap, works alongside Original Medicare to help pay costs that Medicare doesn't cover — like copayments, coinsurance, and deductibles. It gives you predictable, fixed costs and maximum flexibility.

How It Works

You keep Original Medicare (Parts A & B) and add a Medigap policy. The supplement pays after Medicare pays its share. You can see any doctor or hospital that accepts Medicare — nationwide.

Key Benefits

  • Predictable, fixed monthly costs
  • See any doctor or hospital that accepts Medicare
  • No network restrictions — nationwide coverage
  • No referrals needed for specialists
  • Guaranteed renewable as long as you pay premiums
  • Ideal for frequent travelers or snowbirds

Things to Consider

  • Separate Part D plan needed for drug coverage
  • Higher monthly premiums than Medicare Advantage
  • Medical underwriting may apply outside open enrollment
  • Plans are standardized (Plan G, Plan N, etc.)

Medicare Part D

Medicare Part D provides prescription drug coverage through private insurance companies approved by Medicare. It can be added as a standalone plan alongside Original Medicare or a Medigap policy.

How It Works

You enroll in a standalone Part D plan that covers your specific medications. Plans have formularies (drug lists) and tiered cost structures. Premiums, deductibles, and copays vary by plan.

Key Benefits

  • Covers brand-name and generic prescription drugs
  • Catastrophic coverage after out-of-pocket limit
  • Protects against high drug costs
  • Available in every county in Minnesota
  • Can be paired with Original Medicare or Medigap
  • Annual enrollment allows plan changes

Things to Consider

  • Late enrollment penalty if you delay signing up
  • Formularies change annually — review each year
  • Preferred pharmacy networks affect your costs
  • Income-related premium adjustments may apply (IRMAA)
