Medicare Advantage is an all-in-one alternative to Original Medicare (Parts A & B), offered by private insurance companies approved by Medicare. Most plans include prescription drug coverage and many offer extra benefits not covered by Original Medicare.
How It Works
You still use Medicare, but your coverage is delivered through a private insurer. You pay your Part B premium plus any plan premium (many are $0). Plans have networks of doctors and hospitals.
Medicare Supplement insurance, also called Medigap, works alongside Original Medicare to help pay costs that Medicare doesn't cover — like copayments, coinsurance, and deductibles. It gives you predictable, fixed costs and maximum flexibility.
How It Works
You keep Original Medicare (Parts A & B) and add a Medigap policy. The supplement pays after Medicare pays its share. You can see any doctor or hospital that accepts Medicare — nationwide.
Medicare Part D provides prescription drug coverage through private insurance companies approved by Medicare. It can be added as a standalone plan alongside Original Medicare or a Medigap policy.
How It Works
You enroll in a standalone Part D plan that covers your specific medications. Plans have formularies (drug lists) and tiered cost structures. Premiums, deductibles, and copays vary by plan.
